The work problem
According to a press release Panasonic Connect published on July 7, 2025, the company began using generative AI in its business with three goals: raising business productivity, improving employees' AI skills and reducing the risk of shadow AI, in which employees separately use AI the company does not manage. The company needed to lead all of its roughly 11,600 employees in Japan to use AI in their work.
Technology and data
The company began using generative AI in its business in February 2023 and runs ConnectAI, an in-house AI assistant service built with large language models from three companies: OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. Employees use the service for programming such as generating whole code and refactoring, for writing work procedures and various standards, and for reviewing materials and analyzing survey comments. Specialized AI that answers company-specific questions is used in quality control, IT support, HR training and other areas, with 7 published cases and 16 more at the verification stage. The service also lets employees upload their own materials and ask the AI to summarize, review or create questions and answers, and from fiscal 2025 the company is piloting AI agents in three areas: support for drafting approval requests in accounting, checks under the Subcontract Act in legal, and email editing in marketing.
Results
According to the press release, the company's analysis of generative AI usage data showed that AI use cut 448,000 hours of working time in 2024, 2.4 times the previous year. The number of uses in the same year was 2.4 million, about 1.7 times the previous year, and the time saved per use was 28 minutes, 1.4 times the previous year, or 36 minutes when images were used. The monthly unique user rate was 49.1%, up 14.3 percentage points from the previous year. The company attributed this to employees shifting from asking the AI questions to assigning it tasks, and to advances in generative AI technology that increased the use of images and documents.
Limits and open questions
The press release does not disclose how the time savings were calculated or the results of the AI agent pilots.
