The work problem

According to an announcement Anthropic published on October 1, 2026, client inquiries reach the Global Markets business of Barclays by email, and requests must contain the information operations colleagues need before they can take action. According to the announcement, Claude models are used in the business to streamline how these client inquiries are processed and managed. In the same announcement, Anne Marie Darling, Group Co-Chief Operating Officer, said the bank aims to reduce time spent on routine activities so that colleagues can focus their expertise on more complex problems.

Technology and data

Global Markets teams use Claude models to classify incoming emails, enrich them with information, and determine the optimal processing route. This processing helps prioritize requests and ensure they contain the information operations colleagues need to take action. Operations colleagues carry out the actions. According to the announcement, Barclays applies robust governance, security controls and human oversight to its AI use cases.

Results

According to the announcement, the platform processes approximately 120,000 emails each day, reducing manual handling activity while helping colleagues identify and act on relevant information more efficiently. Paul Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Anthropic, also said Claude sorts 120,000 emails a day at Barclays.

Limits and open questions

The announcement does not disclose how much processing time was reduced, the classification accuracy, or when operation began. The figure of 120,000 is stated as the number of emails the platform processes each day.
