The work problem

According to an announcement Anthropic published on October 1, 2026, Barclays, the British universal bank, has over 20 million UK retail customers, and Barclays UK employees need to find information and answers when supporting them. In the same announcement, Anne Marie Darling, Group Co-Chief Operating Officer at Barclays, said the bank aims to reduce time spent on routine activities and streamline decision-making so that colleagues can focus their expertise on solving more complex problems. The announcement noted that integrating AI across a large and highly regulated organization requires both capable technology and disciplined governance.

Technology and data

Barclays has run the Colleague Knowledge Assistant since 2025. The assistant is powered by Anthropic's Claude and uses a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architecture, which builds answers from retrieved material. Barclays UK employees use the assistant to find the information and answers they need while serving customers, and support customers with what they find. According to the announcement, Barclays applies robust governance, security controls and human oversight to its AI use cases.

Results

According to the announcement, more than 16,000 Barclays colleagues have adopted the assistant, and it has handled over 1 million searches. Paul Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Anthropic, said Claude now helps 16,000 Barclays colleagues find answers for customers. The announcement stated that the result is faster access to information and quicker support for customers.

Limits and open questions

The announcement does not disclose how much search or service time was reduced, the accuracy of answers, or the month in 2025 when operation began. The figures and descriptions come from the announcement by the vendor, Anthropic.
