The work problem
BMW's R&D incident workflow needed better incomplete ticket titles and descriptions, and retrieval of past incidents with the same root cause to avoid duplicate investigations. Internal German and English data carries proprietary categories and identifiers. General models given detailed instructions could invent identifiers or use the wrong output language. AWS and BMW selected this workflow to validate model customization and evaluation methods.
Technology and data
During a 12-week collaboration, the teams used ticket edit histories and root-cause analysis outcomes. Bedrock models generated training examples, while a separate judge filtered them for information preservation, structure and language compliance. Task-specific QLoRA adapters were trained on a small base model in SageMaker and served through one real-time endpoint with adapter selection. Tasks rewrite ticket titles and descriptions, ask for missing information and judge whether a new incident shares a root cause with given historical candidates. BMW controls use-case definitions, evaluation criteria, curated data and adapters.
Results
AWS and BMW report that, on held-out evaluation data, title quality rose from 3.74 to 4.71 on a five-point scale, and description quality rose from 2.84 to 3.87. The model also improved its ability to recognize when no candidate shared the root cause. These are experiments using one training configuration and fixed candidate lists, not measured field time savings or operating results for an end-to-end retrieval service.
Limits and open questions
The source explicitly describes single-seed, single-hyperparameter evaluations. End-to-end retrieval, continuous production deployment and actual engineer time savings were not established.
