The work problem
Fresh-food ingredients ordered by stores do not map one to one to the products sold. Multiple donut varieties may share a retail identifier, while deli sandwiches require demand for finished products and ingredients to be considered together. One meat subprimal can become steaks or roasts, and random-weight produce with a short shelf life makes inventory data unreliable. Albertsons Companies needed to connect ordering with actual sales while accounting for these relationships.
Technology and data
Afresh provided Fresh Replenishment, using AI and data modeling to connect ordering, inventory and demand. For bakery items with aggregated sales, it estimates demand and inventory by item; deli recipe models represent relationships between finished goods and ingredients. Meat and seafood models link prepared sellable items back to their original inputs to recommend ordering quantities. Store teams and buyers use the information to make decisions. The company also said DC Forecast was operating across all fresh distribution centers, providing buyers with daily demand forecasts.
Results
On October 23, 2025, Afresh announced the completed nationwide rollout to bakery and deli departments at all Albertsons Companies stores. This extended coverage across fresh departments beyond produce, meat and seafood. Michelle Larson, Chief Merchandising Officer of Albertsons Companies, said the technology improved the shopping experience by helping store teams maintain availability and freshness of customer favorites. The source qualitatively describes sales improvements and waste reduction but does not quantify the effects of this rollout.
Limits and open questions
Before-and-after waste rates, sales, ordering accuracy and labor time were not disclosed. Distribution-center adoption is described only as occurring the previous year, so no adoption month was used for chronological ordering.
