The work problem
According to a press release Soseikai General Hospital in Kyoto issued on June 3, 2026, the hospital's rehabilitation department writes about 300 rehabilitation summaries a year. Therapists wrote each one individually, and the time burden, variation in content and the psychological burden of sudden requests were issues. The hospital had also tried semi-automation with tools such as Excel macros, but it aimed for further efficiency and standardization.
Technology and data
From 2025 the hospital introduced a new writing workflow using Ubie's generative AI service. Generative AI helps draft the summaries, and because they are medical documents, the responsible therapist always checks the content and corrects it as needed before completing it. The hospital compared 16 summaries written before and 22 written after the introduction, and also analyzed the data with a linear mixed effects model with therapist ID as a random intercept, since the same therapists wrote several summaries.
Results
According to the press release, the median writing time fell by 13 minutes, from 23 minutes to 10 minutes, or about 57%, and the mixed effects analysis also confirmed the reduction after the introduction. At about 300 summaries a year, this is equivalent to about 3,900 minutes, or about 65 hours, of work time saved. The system received high usability ratings on the System Usability Scale (SUS), and staff said the psychological burden of sudden requests had eased and the content had become easier to read. The study was published in the international medical journal Cureus.
Limits and open questions
Only 16 records before and 22 after the introduction were compared, and the press release does not give the error rate of the AI drafts.
