Summary
GitHub's annual Octoverse report, published October 28, records 17.9 billion pushes and 34.3 billion commits over the past 12 months, both all-time highs. As of September, developers started more than 40% of pull requests with an agent, up from 17% in March. New repositories with an agent configuration file logged eight times as many commits on average as those without, and 61% of Copilot users worked with more than one model. The figures come from GitHub's platform telemetry.
Why it matters for our work
Starting work by directing an agent and reviewing what comes back is quickly becoming the default in software development. It signals that the unit and pace of work each developer handles is growing.
