Starting with version 2.1.277, Claude Code reads AGENTS.md when a project has no CLAUDE.md file. Developers who use Claude Code alongside other coding agents previously had to maintain separate instruction files for each tool; now a single AGENTS.md can serve them all. The behavior can be changed under 'Project instructions' in /config, and it is not yet available on Bedrock, Vertex, or Foundry.
